The St. Croix Welcome Center proudly hosted an exciting art contest for talented Virgin Island artists, inviting them to recreate the unforgettable final scene from the American classic film The Shawshank Redemption. What made this assignment especially meaningful? Many people don’t realize that the iconic last scene of the film, set on a beach in “Zihuatanejo, Mexico,” was actually filmed on the stunningly beautiful Sandy Point Beach here in St. Croix!

Sandy Point, located just outside of Frederiksted, is a breathtaking stretch of coastline that has captivated residents and visitors alike. It was the perfect location for the movie’s conclusion, symbolizing freedom, redemption, and a new beginning — themes that resonated powerfully with our local artists.

The response was fantastic, with many skilled local artists participating and bringing their unique perspectives to this creative assignment. Each piece told its own story, capturing a different emotion or interpretation of that serene yet powerful scene. The entries were displayed at the St. Croix Welcome Center, where the public could cast their votes. Visitors from cruise ships, locals, and art enthusiasts alike came to admire the works and support our island’s thriving artistic community.
After an inspiring exhibition and enthusiastic voting period, which concluded on November 3rd, we’re thrilled to announce our winners:
And the Winners Are…

1st Place: “Freedom” by Claudia Hodges
Claudia’s piece captured the spirit of liberation in a way that spoke deeply to all who saw it, earning her the $2,500 grand prize, presented by the St. Croix Welcome Center.

2nd Place: “Freedom” by Eliana L. Schuster-Brown
Eliana’s work, sponsored by the Sandy Point Art Oasis, earned the $500 second prize. Her piece conveyed a unique, contemplative take on the film’s ending, resonating with viewers’ love for St. Croix’s natural beauty.

3rd Place: “Free” by Jose Joseph
Jose’s artwork, supported by The Fred Hotel, won the $250 third prize. His interpretation brought a fresh and expressive vision of hope and escape that left a lasting impact.

A Big Thank You to Our Artists and Sponsors
Congratulations to all our winners and every participant who poured their talent and heart into this contest. We’re incredibly grateful to our sponsors — the St. Croix Welcome Center, Sandy Point Art Oasis, and The Fred Hotel — for making this event possible. And to everyone who stopped by to vote, thank you for helping to uplift our local artists.
Seeing the wide array of creative perspectives displayed by each artist was truly inspiring. It’s a testament to how art can transform and reimagine even the most iconic moments. As we wrap up this unforgettable contest, let’s remember: whether through brushstrokes, sculpture, or mixed media, an artist’s journey is all about embracing that call to create. So, as Andy Dufresne famously said, “Get busy livin’ or get busy dyin’” — and for every artist, that means getting busy creating!

Correction: I mistakenly put the wrong paintings in the 2nd and 3rd place notations. My apologies to both artists, this error has been corrected.
What a beautiful display of talent and creativity.
