Liberty Hall: A Blend of Historic Charm and Modern Living

Nestled in the heart of Frederiksted, Liberty Hall stands as a testament to St. Croix’s rich history and architectural heritage. This historic coral-cut building, originally constructed in 1775, has been well preserved and renovated to offer modern comforts while retaining its historic charm. The three-story main house and its two adjoining cottages are being thoughtfully transformed into a vibrant residential community. The current configuration includes 11 one-bedroom apartments, 8 studio apartments, a two-bedroom cottage, a studio cottage, a storage room, and beautifully laid-out courtyard common areas. A Rich Historical Legacy

Liberty Hall is more than just a residence—it holds a significant piece of history. Designated as a registered historical building by the St. Croix Historic Preservation Committee in 2007, it holds a prominent place in the island’s past. The property’s storied history dates back to its first owner, Thomas Armstrong, who occupied it from 1775 to 1799. It later passed into the hands of Dr. William Stedmann and family from 1799 to 1904 and was subsequently owned by prominent merchant Robert Merwin from 1904 to 1972. Throughout its history, Liberty Hall has hosted some of the most notable figures of its time, including ex-presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin D. Roosevelt, who visited as guests of the Merwin family.

In addition to its presidential visitors, Liberty Hall is also the birthplace of John David Merwin, the first native Virgin Islands-born governor. Born on September 26, 1921, Merwin played a pivotal role in the history of the U.S. Virgin Islands, serving as governor from 1958 to 1961 after being nominated by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1957. His connection to Liberty Hall adds another layer of historical significance to this already remarkable property.

A Unique Opportunity for Modern Living

Today, Liberty Hall offers a unique opportunity to live in a space that seamlessly blends the past with the present. For modern-day residents, it provides not just a place to live, but a home steeped in history and character. The ongoing renovations are carefully designed to preserve the building’s historic integrity while providing the comforts and conveniences of modern living.
