What is Mango Melee in St. Croix?
Mango Melee is a place where the community celebrates a festive time to introduce types of mangos, learn about the island culture, taste the mango recipes, quadrille dance, art, music, and fun. Mango Melee was created in 1997 as a family tradition. Foremost, the heritage of the botanical garden is a collaboration of the three USVI islands St. Croix, St. Thomas, and St. John, that propagated different plant species. To navigate native awareness and education on the type of plants that grow on the islands. The event also gives you the opportunity to learn about nature’s cultivation of plants and trees.

The event hosts a competition for mango lovers of the Mango Dis and Mango Dat. A game to compete to see who the best mango chefs and cooks around the Caribbean are. It features drinks, desserts, and mango edible goodies. The winner will be awarded prize giveaways. A contest will be held for the fastest mango-eating contest, who can eat the most mangos in 1 minute using one hand. Your mark, get set, go! To join the race, you can sign up before the event takes place. The Mango Melee King and Queen Contest will be competing on stage, the fashion of the best-dressed madras, talent, and introduction. The competitors would perform, show off their fashion statement and demonstrate talent and give best answers to mango related questions, from there the answers that would be judged. The winner is pronounced the Mango Melee King and Queen, they are given a big trophy and cash prizes. There will be arts and crafts, and vendors of local foods and drinks. The botanist’s garden museum and store will also be open, which will include the Great Hall of Displays. Entry fees are $10 per person, kids are free.
When do mango trees bear fruit? It takes about four to eight years to bear mangos. Mangos are known as the King of Fruits. The mouth-watering fruity texture and quenching taste. When it is time to bear fruits, the mango tree will bloom small flowers. The season to start blooming is around June. Some trees may produce mangos in late May through the months of September, and some mango species bear through late November to early December. Mango grows best in tropical and warmer subtropical climates, ripe in summer and autumn. The most popular Mango people will love on St. Croix is called the Julie Mango, if the tree is grafted it is even better for the tree to grow short, about 6 feet and bear a lot more Mangos.
