Discover the Unique Attraction of Beer-Drinking Pigs and Try the Local MamaWanna at St. Croix’s Domino Club

When I first heard about the Domino Club, the idea of pigs that drank “beer” was a bit intriguing to me, but also seemed like something straight out of a weird dream. I figured I had to try it out for myself and see what all the fuss was about.

The Domino Club is also called the “Jungle Bar” because of its remote rainforest location deep into the hillside of Montpellier.  The drive there is a bumpy, but beautiful one. It is lined with thick green vegetation and stunning mahogany trees that are native to the island.  It is a very worthwhile drive.

Once arrived, I bought a non-alcoholic beer from the bar, then walked over to the pig pen, and a large pig named “Kevin Bacon” came right up to the edge of the enclosure, it snatched the can out of my hand and aggressively crushed it with its tusk-toothed mouth. Foam gushed down its throat and then he tossed the can aside ready for more. It is pretty funny to see in person. Admittedly, it is a little bizarre, but the pigs love the attention and seem to smile right back at you.

The Domino Club is a mixture of locals and tourists hanging out at the bar hut. The menu has a variety of local dishes that might change from day to day.  Their Roti with curry chickpeas, potatoes, chicken, beef, and shrimp seems to be a popular dish.

The star of the menu is the signature drink, MamaWanna. This strong, sweet rum drink is a secret mixture of alcohol, roots, and spices that are aged for an undisclosed amount of time. It seems to have a little folklore and its recipe is very secretive. It’s a must-try for anyone visiting the island. It can be taken as a shot or mixed with soda or juice. I found it delicious as a shot.

The atmosphere is very basic, with a dirt floor, but that’s part of the charm. Everyone was friendly and the service was great. It’s a must-see lunch spot when driving the scenic route while touring St. Croix. Overall, The Domino Club is a great spot for a fun and unique experience, with local flavors, and friendly staff.
