Last Saturday signified my second St. Patrick’s Day celebration on St. Croix. In contrast to the previous year when I was a newcomer to the island, unfamiliar with many faces, this time around, I was extended an invitation by some local friends to participate and assist with one of the floats in the 53rd St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The float I joined held a special place in my heart, as it was sponsored by none other than my favorite local haunt, the Lost Dog Pub in Frederiksted.

As the sun cast its morning glow over the sleepy streets of Frederiksted, a sense of anticipation filled the air. It was the morning of the 53rd St. Patrick’s Day Parade, and locals from the West Island had gathered early at the Lost Dog Pub to kick off the day’s festivities. But this wasn’t just any ordinary gathering—it is a tradition rooted in community spirit and camaraderie. Let the party begin!
The atmosphere at Lost Dog was alive with excitement as friends and neighbors came together to transform the humble establishment into a hub of creativity, with Lost Dog attire, and everything imaginable in green. With sleeves rolled up and tools in hand, the team set to work on building out the float that would proudly represent their corner of St. Croix in the parade. To note, many locals gathered throughout the previous week to paint the brightly colored panels that were attached to the sides of the float.

As we joined the procession through the streets of Christiansted, the atmosphere was abuzz with energy and excitement. Adorned in green and filled with a super fun collection of people dressed for the occasion, the float stood out amidst the colorful array, a testament to the island’s rich Irish heritage while still representing the West.
The tradition of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade dates back to 1969 when a group of locals took it upon themselves to bring the celebration to St. Croix. Their efforts culminated in a vibrant parade, which became an annual fixture on the island’s calendar.

Reflecting on the parade, we couldn’t help but appreciate the diversity of St. Croix’s cultural tapestry. From the majestic Moko Jumbies to the lively music and costumes, each element added to the unique charm of the celebration.
Beyond the festivities, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade served as a means of support for local charities and organizations. Through the dedication of the parade committee, police department, vendors, and cleanup crews, we contributed to the betterment of our community.

As we journeyed through the streets of Christiansted, we were filled with a sense of unity and camaraderie. For in that moment, we were more than just participants in a parade—we were stewards of our island’s heritage and ambassadors of the enduring spirit of St. Croix, honored to have been recognized for our contribution to the celebration. Oh, and did I mention the Lost Dog Pub Float won the “Best Overall Float” award…well done fellow Westies!
