Aliyah Boston, a young basketball superstar from St. Thomas, entered the professional basketball arena with a bang on Monday night as the No. 1 pick of the 2023 WNBA draft. She will be joining the Indiana Fever, making history as the team secures the top choice in the draft for the first time.

The 21-year-old basketball player has already won numerous awards, including an NCAA title and the Naismith national player of the year award. Her accomplishments don’t end there. As a power forward for the University of South Carolina Gamecocks, she helped lead the team to three final four appearances over the past four years and a national championship in 2022. On top of that, she is also a three-time first-team All-American, a two-time Naismith Defensive Player of the Year honoree, and the 2022 National Player of the Year. She earned four Lisa Leslie Center of the Year awards throughout her impressive college career.

Boston’s achievements in the WNBA will undoubtedly be plentiful, and her future with the Indiana Fever looks extremely bright. According to Indiana’s General Manager Lin Dunn, “Aliyah Boston will have an immediate impact on our franchise on and off the court. We are excited to pair her with Kelsey (Mitchell) and NaLyssa (Smith) as we reload the Indiana Fever. We are very impressed with Aliyah’s post skills as well as her natural leadership skills. This is a great day for our franchise!”

Despite all her success, Boston has emphasized the importance of living a normal life and not developing a big ego. Growing up in the U.S. Virgin Islands, she learned to appreciate the little things in life and values the importance of not forgetting where she came from.

Being raised in St. Thomas, a culture that prioritizes respect and acceptance, helped shape her into the kind and giving person she is today. At the age of 12, Boston moved to New England to live with her aunt so she could pursue her basketball career, which gave her opportunities to travel and compete against top competition. She believes giving back to her community is essential, as it is where everything began for her. Encouraging young female athletes is also significant to her, as she wants to inspire the next generation of athletes.

In conclusion, it is evident that Aliyah Boston has the potential to become one of the WNBA’s greatest players. Her talent, humility, and commitment to giving back to her community make her stand out from other athletes. We have no doubt that she will excel both on and off the court, and we look forward to seeing more of her inspirational story unfold.

We are hoping she can reach the heights of another Virgin Islands No 1 pick…Tim Duncan. Congrats Aliyah, we wish you continued success!
