Governor Albert Bryan Jr. recently took a walk through Frederiksted, known as Freedom City, to explore various derelict and abandoned buildings and discuss potential improvements for the town. He was joined by Shomari Moorehead, President of “Our Town Frederiksted,” and longtime resident Meredith Nielsen. Together, they engaged in a meaningful discussion about the historic buildings that defined Frederiksted’s unique character and heritage, focusing on the pressing issue of derelict and abandoned buildings. A video of this walk can be watched here.

Governor Albert Bryan’s goals for Frederiksted are centered on preserving its rich culture, promoting community growth, and fostering collaborative efforts for a sustainable future. He aims to restore historic landmarks like Fort Frederik, enhance public spaces, and improve residents’ quality of life. Economic development initiatives include supporting local businesses, encouraging entrepreneurship, and hosting cultural events that unite the community. Collaborating with local government, businesses, nonprofits, and residents, the objective is to ensure balanced development that honors the town’s past while embracing progress.

Preserving Our Culture
Frederiksted’s rich history, spanning from its founding in 1751 to its pivotal role in key historical events, is a cherished legacy they are dedicated to preserving. Preservation efforts focus on safeguarding landmarks such as Fort Frederik and the area’s many historic homes, aiming to educate both residents and tourists alike. An innovative idea to further this goal includes the proposed development of a Virgin Islands app, providing visitors with a downloadable walking tour and a detailed registry of historical buildings. This initiative not only highlights the significance of each site but also promotes local businesses, enhancing cultural awareness and economic vitality.

Collaborative Endeavors Towards a Future of Sustainability
These efforts are driven by a deep commitment from Governor Bryan, who fondly stated, “Don’t tell anyone this, but Frederiksted is my favorite town.” Collaborations must involve local government, businesses, nonprofit organizations, and residents. Many infrastructure projects are already underway, with investments in buildings, roads, parks, and athletic facilities that benefit the community.

Through dedication, collaboration, and a shared vision, the hope is to transform Frederiksted into a beacon of culture, community, and growth. The goal is to honor the past while paving the way for a brighter, more prosperous future for Frederiksted.
Would be possible to bring a Restaurant called, St. Tropix? and the Bar Restaurant called, The Last Hurrah? I miss those. Oh, also please have a Thomas Bakery back in Fredriksted.

Help should be given to the refinery. It provided jobs, tax revenue and homes to the community.
Thank you, Honorable Governor Bryan, we spoke about this a couple years ago. I’m looking forward to seeing a master plan for all of the above mentioned program/projects. My offer still stands if you need my help in the future.
