Part two of the United States Virgin Islands (USVI) Caribbean Music Festival Series was truly a night to remember. As an admittedly new and unsophisticated fan of jazz, I was blown away by the talent and energy displayed by each performer.
The festival offers an opportunity to experience the unique mix of cultures through music. The free outdoor community concerts held at the Frederiksted Promenade in St. Croix offer a vibrant atmosphere and a chance to connect with the local community.

The night began with the V.I. Jazz Collective, led by Grammy-winning director Dion Parson, and native V.I. saxophonist Ron Blake, who showcased their musical craft developed over years as part of the V.I. Youth Ensemble. The Collective’s high energy set the pace for the evening, and they left the crowd wanting more.

Next up was the headliner, Grammy-winning Chucho Valdes, who took the stage with an air of grace and style that only comes with years of experience. His performance was electric, and the audience was mesmerized by his skills on the piano. The brief solo performances by 7-time Grammy-winning Terence Blanchard and Grammy-winning Joe Lovano added even more depth to the evening, with each performer bringing their unique style and energy to the stage.
The jazz fusion performance that followed brought the three performers together for a truly unforgettable musical experience. Each musician had the opportunity to highlight their individual talents, and the result was an amazing blend of musical styles that had the crowd cheering for more.

The night ended with the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, led by Grammy-winning Adonis Rose, and joined by Gabrielle Cavassa. They brought the house down with their signature big band sound, including New Orleans classics and a variety of jazz staples, infused with island groove and soul. Cavassa’s distinctive voice provided a bold expression that was the perfect complement to the orchestra’s transonic power and versatility.

So many Grammy winners on a single stage this past weekend…Amazing!
Overall, the USVI Caribbean Music Festival was an unforgettable night of music, talent, and energy. From the high-energy opening act to the electrifying performances by each of the special guests and the closing act, the evening was a celebration of jazz and the power of music to bring people together.
With an array of A-list artists who have sold millions of records and toured across multiple continents, the USVI Caribbean Music Festival is a game-changer in the music festival world. From established global legends to up-and-coming local acts, Saturday was part two of a three-part festival series on the island of St. Croix.

The festival was a celebration of music, community, and culture, and I look forward to attending the next festival, which is scheduled for May 27, 2023, featuring Grammy Award-nominated jazz trumpet player Jon Faddis. Mark your calendars, you won’t want to miss it either!
