Are you a dog owner looking for free veterinary services? Look no further than the West End Community Dog Clinic held on the first Saturday of every month. The clinic’s focus is to provide a judgment-free wellness check-up for at-risk pets and pet owners in underserved communities throughout St Croix.

The West End Community Dog Clinic has gained popularity, as seen in the last first Saturday in March clinic that gave voluntary veterinary assessments to 111 dogs. This Saturday, April 1st, from 8:30 am to 11:30 am, dog owners are encouraged to mark their calendars for another free clinic.

Apart from the free heartworm screening and free wellness vaccines, dog owners can also obtain spay/neuter vouchers for the SCAWC’s services at no cost. Low-cost preventative care for dewormer, flea and tick treatments, and physical exams and recommendations are also offered. The clinic usually entails 10-15 volunteers and 2-3 volunteer veterinarians on hand to keep things moving at a fun “dog’s pace”.
The clinic’s impact reaches beyond just veterinary services as it also fosters a sense of community among dog and puppy owners. It is quickly becoming a social event. Children are encouraged to attend the clinic as it provides education for local youth on how to better take care of owned and stray animals. Indeed, the ultimate goal is to make a difference in animal care that begins with how our youth learn to care for animals.

Apart from education and vet services, each owner gets a medical record for their pup to take home, saving time and money on future check-ups. This year marks the West End Community Dog Clinic’s one-year anniversary, an incredible accomplishment celebrated with gratitude. However, the clinic’s future goals depend heavily on its donors, volunteers, and sponsors.
The clinic has several goals to improve services in the future. Among these goals are providing full physical pet exams at no cost, getting medical equipment (like stethoscopes) for immersive children’s educational programs, and expanding those programs into the future. A significant aim of the clinic is a no-cost neutering treatment to tackle the growing problem of dog and cat overpopulation that is ever present in the island community.

Spaying and neutering your pets are not only beneficial to your family but also to the entire community. This simple and safe procedure offers numerous benefits. Neutering male dogs prevent them from roaming and makes them better protectors of your family. It also eliminates the expense and stress of unwanted litters, saving innocent animals from being abandoned in dumpsites. This procedure can help prevent some forms of pet cancer. Spaying female pets can prevent them from going into heat. And finally, pets that go through this procedure tend to live longer and healthier lives.

Now for a word from our sponsor… Just kidding, but it’s worth getting to know one of the key sponsors behind the free West End Community Dog Clinic…Ruff Start STX.
Ruff Start STX is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Their mission is proactive in searching for critically ill, injured, and abandoned dogs. They go further to visit dump sites and remove dogs in need, advocate for dogs surrendered in bad living situations, and gain the trust of scared and shutdown dogs to bring them to medical care, socialize, and assist in their eventual re-homing.

Ruff Start STX focuses mainly on dogs that are typically considered ‘unadoptable’ and would not survive a shelter setting. They offer the necessary attention and care to enable the dogs to transform into secure, loveable human companions. Ruff Start STX’s goal is to provide a safe haven for dogs in hopeless situations and allow them to start a new, hopeful journey in life.

Running a non-profit organization and a clinic of this nature comes with financial challenges. That’s why you may consider participating in some fun events that benefit the clinic. On April 16th, Carambola Golf Course is hosting “Diamonds in the Ruff“, a 4-person scramble that promises fun while making a meaningful contribution. Check the link here for more details on the event.

In the spirit of contribution, here are a couple of links to help: Community Clinic Fund and Ruff Start Wish List to contribute to this noble cause.
