Souvenirs from St. Croix

Whenever I talk to friends or family about my visit to St. Croix, everyone asks the same question- “What are you bringing me home?” In an effort to avoid cliche gifts, I wanted to find presents that are authentic to the culture of St. Croix. These are people I care about, and I want to showcase my appreciation for them with meaningful gestures. So, I began perusing the shops in search of the most authentic souvenirs from St. Croix.

St. Croix Souvenirs

Moko Jumbie Memorabilia

St. Croix Souvenirs

As an integral part of Crucian culture, anything with Moko Jumbie’s dancing seems appropriate. Their energy is electric and not only entertain but embody the spirit of St. Croix. They’re fun and have an incredible history behind them. I’ve seen jewelry, craft kits (Christa’s Art Gallery has a ton of them) or even something as simple as a sticker. I purchased one from St. Croix Surf Co. and it’s now a permanent fixture on my laptop. Every time I see it, it brings a smile to my face of my memories here on island.

Another simple yet great token is the Madras print. Plaid is in, and why not brighten up a look with a V.I. Madras print? The colors of the V.I. madras represent the U.S. Virgin Islands:

Turquoise for the Caribbean Sea that embodies the natural beauty of the islands
Blue for the deep seas that allowed ease of transport and made the deep harbors of St. Thomas
Pink for the color of the conch shell, a symbol of the call to freedom
Yellow for the Ginger Thomas, the national flower of the Virgin Islands
Green for the vast fields of natural resources
White in acknowledgement of the original attire of the Virgin Islanders who wore the fabric of the white flour sacks Red representing love and strength and appears in all the flags that have flown across the Virgin Islands.

Any type of clothing or fabric would be appropriate and liven up any mood. I see the colors and it immediately takes me to this island.

Crucian Hook Bracelet

St. Croix Souvenirs

While many Caribbean islands try to duplicate, there is nothing that screams St. Croix more than a Crucian hook bracelet. For almost 60 years, this bracelet is worn (by pretty much everyone on island) in the spirit of true love. Legend has it if the bracelet’s hook opening points towards your heart, it means that you’ve found that special someone. If the hook opening is worn away from your heart, it expresses that your heart seeks true love. It’s a conversation piece that promotes unity in the world. Like owning a Jeep, anyone who sees another with the jewelry will immediately spark a conversation. While the majority of jewelry stores sell them, the original creator belongs to Sonya’s Fine Art Jewelry.

Alvin’s Hot Sauce

St. Croix Souvenirs

The first time I had tacos on island, the restaurant gave me the option of Cholula or a local hot sauce. Naturally I chose the latter, and my mouth was on fire in the best way. If you have a sensation seeker in your life, Alvin’s is the ultimate hot sauce. Made from a Crucian who sources island scotch bonnet peppers, it’s a simple gift that will bring an overwhelming amount of joy. And, really pack a punch! While the hot sauce is available in the States, it’s a great way to introduce the product to someone new and keep them buying it. I promise- they’ll want more.

Local Spirits

It’s my experience that alcohol is ALWAYS a crowd pleaser. It’s festive, can be enjoyed by one or many, and the ultimate entertainer. Now, to be fair, most Crucian spirits have now made their way into the US and various countries. But the authenticity of buying it directly on island gives an incredible story. Not to mention, the duty free pricing for you as a buyer. Additionally, some place have specialty styles limited to the island. I know Mutiny makes several styles that are available seasonally and exclusively from the distillery. Other brands include Cruzan or Captain Morgan Rum, or the famous Mama Juana from Mt. Pellier Domino Club. Then you can always bring up your venture into the rainforest and beer drinking pigs! Bring back bottles and you’re guaranteed to bring a smile to someone’s face. It’s a simple gift that always delivers.

Gift buying in St. Croix isn’t limited to these items. There are SO many options to bring back to the people in your life you care about the most. But these are sure to bring a smile to their face, as well as yours, as you reminisce about your incredible time spent in St. Croix. What are some of your favorite Souvenirs from St. Croix?
