Fading into Obscurity: One of The Last Kmart’s Battle Against Retail Extinction
When I first arrived on St. Croix, I was taken aback by the presence of a couple of Kmarts on the island, the only “big-box” stores in sight. It seemed like Kmarts had long faded away on the US mainland. Intrigued by their survival, I embarked on a quest to uncover the dwindling number of Kmarts still standing worldwide.
Know How to Prepare for Hurricanes on St. Croix?
September is the highest hurricane watch for the United States Virgin Islands. In the year 2017, the Island had back-to-back category 5 hurricanes. A massive hurricane Irma came in with a shifting wind speed gusting at 185-220 strength, heading directly to the island on September 6, 2017, as devastation came through everything in its path and destroyed poles, trees, and many homes and businesses. Then two weeks later, Hurricane Maria on September 15, 2017, with high speed at 165-187 winds and rain as the hurricane shifted and scrabbled what was already into pieces and took more homes and businesses to their last standing. The islands were devastatingly flooded and scattered with broken trees, lifeless animals, and debris. A Sweet Spot in STX
As a person with a chronic sweet tooth, I knew that I couldn’t go without some ice cream during my time at St. Croix. I will forever be grateful to my taxi driver, Iron, for recommending Armstrong’s Homemade Deli and Ice Cream. I haven’t had ice cream this good in a long time.
Exploding Beer and Giant Pigs!
It was a bumpy climb through the rainforest, but that only made our trip even more of an adventure. St. Croix’s rainforest is home to so much wildlife, vegetation, and a unique restaurant. Driving through the middle of the rainforest, we found the Mt. Pellier Domino Club- home of the beer-drinking pigs.
Homemade Soap Class at the CMCA
Every time Zane and I walk through Downtown Frederiksted, we pass the Caribbean Museum Center for The Arts (CMCA). As time passed, curiosity got the best of me, so I looked up what the place was for. The website revealed that it was a building full of beautiful Caribbean art, but also a place that offered art classes! I jumped online and immediately booked the first class I saw: Friends in the Courtyard homemade soap making!
Does Everyone Have Crabs?
The words, “Last call for crabs! Does everyone who wants crabs have crabs?”, are actually quite common here on St. Croix. Each week, people line up in bars, resorts, and restaurants to get crabs… hermit crabs. Why? To, hopefully, win Tito and Sue’s Crab Races.
Clues to Jamaican Treasure
Since Melanie and I have only been on St. Croix for a couple of weeks (and we don’t have a car), we haven’t had much time to explore parts of the island other than the obvious ones. We were in for a pleasant surprise when our friend, Keller, visited St. Croix and led us to the most secret gem in Christiansted.
Making Friends = More Adventure!
One of the advantages of Melanie and I visiting St. Croix was that Melanie’s cousin, Anthony, lives in St. Thomas. Since he travels back and forth from St. Croix to St. Thomas, he has friends in St. Croix that we’ve gotten to know. A couple of days ago, Anthony told us he was coming to St. Croix for the weekend. We never would have expected the adventures we had with him.
